When the Matariki stars appear it is the beginning of the Maori new year
We celebrate Matariki like we celebrate each other's birthdays.
Like sisters the stars shine bright like the blazing sun.
Matariki is a time for joy like jumping on a bed
It is a time to learn like learning how to peel a sweet mandarin.
It is a time to plant crops like kumara.
It is a time to fish and hunt chicken and pig.
It is a time to make things like necklaces, clothes and baskets.
It is a time to forgive your enemies.
Matatriki reminds me of celebrating a traditional Tongan birthday.
Hai was this fun?
